Jeremy Allen White Praises Ayo Edebiri’s Directorial Debut in ‘The Bear’

Jeremy Allen White is giving Ayo Edebiri her flowers for her directorial debut on The Bear.

At the The Bear season 3 premiere on Tuesday, June 25, the actor — who plays Carmie Berzatto in the hit FX series — opened up about what it was like to watch his costar yell “action” for the very first time.

“It was the best,” White recalled to Variety. “I wasn’t acting in that first day of hers, I was on set just like hanging out.”

Though Edebiri — who plays his sous chef Sydney Adamu — wasn’t able to give him formal direction for the scenes he was involved in, the Shameless alum, 33, had nothing but praise for her job well done.

“I can say she did a beautiful job. She was very confident, I mean everybody knows how smart she is,” He continued. “She’s a beautiful actress and a very intuitive actress. And I think she’s a very beautiful and intuitive director as well.”

Edebiri also told Deadline that she had an emotional response to directing her first episode.

“I cried. It was written very beautifully,” she said of reading the script for the first time. “I was just so moved by it and really really touched that Chris [Storer] had me in mind to direct it.”

“I could see it as soon as I read it,” she added.

Since The Bear’s debut on FX in 2022, White and Edebiri’s friendship developed a both both on and off-screen. In her Vanity Fair June 2024 cover story, White told the outlet that he had a “tremendous amount of respect” for her as both a person and artist.

“We really enjoy each other in life, on camera and off camera,” White said of the actress. “I hope that sort of that kind of thing shines through on camera between Carm and Syd.”

He added, “Syd is always able to…I don’t know, to deliver something different to Carmy, and she’s usually right. And I guess I think Ayo is also usually right.”
